We’re in the holiday spirit now thanks to a little mingling and jingling on Main Street last week. Hope you all were on hand to catch some yuletide cheer with the music of James Beresford’s duo and Fatback and the Groove Band, and that you scooped up some tasty treats and local artwork before heading home.

Last night we were treated to the lively sounds of the Upton Trio at the home of Kirkman and Kathleen Finlay, who graciously opened their doors and welcomed a crowd at a benefit concert for the Nickelodeon Theatre, the SC Philharmonic Youth Orchestra, and the Upton Trio. We can’t wait for the Trio to play at the Fox when we move in. If you love them like we do, you can see them next Tuesday, December 15th at The White Mule.

If you’re still trying to decide what to give your favorite people this year, Nickelodeon memberships make great gifts. Want to really wow your loved ones? Buy them their very own chair in the new theater, or make sure their name appears on the wall of stars in the new lobby. We won’t be ready to show movies in the new space for another year, but we have a layaway plan and you’ll still get credit for the gift this year! Come check us out the next two Saturdays at our table at the All Local Farmers’ Market at 701 Whaley.

Mingle and Jingle on Main!

Join us this Thursday, December 3rd from 6 -9PM for a holiday-themed block party on Main Street. The event will feature the works of various visual and performing artists, and Villa Tronco, the White Mule and other local vendors will be on hand for food and drink. The Nick will be projecting holiday images on the outside wall of the old Silver’s building, and while most of the action will be on the 1500 block, which will be closed to traffic, we’ll be featuring an art exhibit at the Fox, too!

Mingle & Jingle on Main is a continuation of Frame of Mind’s Art Series held the first Thursday of every month. The event is a holiday themed block party that will include various visual and performing artists including artists Jean Bourque, Virginia Scotchie, Stephanie Britt, Eileen Blyth, Howard Hunt and the Village Artists, and many more.

The old Silver’s building will feature the works of Dre Lopez, Sammy Lopez, Nikolai Oskolkov and Kirill Simin with a performance by dancer Sherry Warren and music being spun all evening by DJ GLDFNGR.

The Nick will be projecting seasonal images on the outside wall of the old Silver’s building, and we’ll have an exhibit featuring the work of seven different artists in our future home, the Fox theater. The exhibit will run through Sunday (Friday and Saturday, 10-4 and Sunday 1-4). Free Times will have a taste of Delirium Tribal and Columbia Alternacirque. Mac’s on Main, Villa Tronco, and The Whig will be on hand for food and drink.

There will also be a sneak peek of Crafty Feast that is being held on December 12th. Carolers and music will be on the street while Sonny D and friends (w/ the Palmetto Swing Dancers) will be inside Gotham Bagel. Several of the featured downtown retailers (such as the Museum Shop and Capitol Places) and restaurants will be extending their hours for the event.

And as an added bonus, you will have a chance to meet and greet with some of the cast and crew from Dog Days (a local film directed and produced by Kirk Bair). Don’t miss the opportunity to support our own as they push to make Columbia a shining star in the independent film industry.

Mast General Store purchases Lourie’s Building

Main Street has a new neighbor! Mast General Store recently announced the purchase of the Lourie’s building at 1601 Main Street, right next door to the Fox Theater (future home of the Nickelodeon). This is exciting news for Columbia, and further evidence that Main Street, especially the 1600 block, is on the verge of a major revitalization. We owe a big thank you to everyone who came out last night to the block party, all the folks at COR and City Center Partnership, Debi, and all of our tremendous volunteers. It was a great evening all around. We are so happy that so many people are behind us in our goal to move to our new home and help make our city an even better place to live. We’re giving our members the first opportunity to take part in the capital campaign. Come join us on Wednesday, September 16 for tours of the new facility and presentations on our new giving opportunities. You get the first chance to put your name on either a theater seat or a star to be embedded in the new building.

To help launch the public phase of our campaign our friends at COR and City Center Partnership are hosting a block party for us on Thursday, September 17 on the 1600 block of Main Street. Featuring music from SinDoolah, VJ Patrick Nugent, and demos from Pour it Now, Columbia Quad Squad and Columbia Alternacirque it’s an event you won’t want to miss. Admission is $10 with all proceeds going to our capital campaign. Food and beverages will be available for purchase from local vendors.

Look at us! We’ve just launched our brand new website movethenick.org!!! This will be THE place to learn about all of the exciting things in the Nickelodeon’s future, keep track of how our capital campaign is going, see videos and photos, and, of course, find ways you can help make our move a reality.

We are really excited to get to work with Mad Monkey on this project. In addition to this site, they’ve put together some tremendous media for us that will be rolled out soon.
