more-than-a-move

It’s not just a change of address. It’s not just a beautifully renovated building, or plush new seats that don’t put your rear to sleep (though we admit, that is big). Mark our words, when the final nail has been hammered and the last box unpacked inside 1607 Main Street, a new era will have begun for Columbia film lovers. Here’s why:

Education and Community

More than just a movie theater, 1607 Main Street will soon become the South Carolina Center for Film and Media housing both the Nickelodeon Theatre and the Columbia Media Education Center.  As we progress through the 21st Century the literacy skills necessary for success are evolving at a mind-blowing speed.  The Columbia Media Education Center will work to empower students from the area with those very skills.  Through in-school, after-school and summer programs students will learn the essentials in media production and viewing skills.  Not a student anymore?  You won’t be left out.  The new space will also allow us to increase our educational opportunities for you as well, with special workshops, post-screening discussion, films series and more.

The New Downtown Destination

The Nickelodeon is committed to being a good neighbor and is strongly committed to our city’s efforts to revitalize Main Street.  In our new location we look forward to greater partnerships with other cultural institutions (like the Columbia Museum of Art), local bars, restaurants and businesses in order to make our downtown a more vibrant destination.  Open seven days a week and with tens of thousands of visitors a year, the SC Center for Film and Media will be another anchor in the Main Street corridor.

Greater Capacity

The two theaters inside the new South Carolina Center for Film and Media will nearly triple our current seating capacity.  This will allow for greater flexibility in programming, more films, longer runs, new series and more! Put simply, you’re Netflix queue is about to take a beating.

Our expanded lobby and concession area means no more waiting in a cramped space to grab your ticket and some wine.  We’ll be offering an expanded line of concessions, plus you’ll have room to hang out with friends for those essential pre- and post-screening conversations.

Facilities and Equipment

In addition to improved seating, clearer sound and a spacious waiting and lounge area, our new home will be outfitted with state-of-the-art projection equipment. From the latest digital releases to archival prints of classic films, these advances open up a new world of opportunity for special features and thematic runs.

The South Carolina Center for Film and Media will be all of this and much more. But we need your help. Please take part and help make this new evolution of the Nickelodeon a reality.
